South India by Road: Temples, Tea Country and the Backwaters

This thoughtfully paced 11-day route connects Tamil Nadu’s historic cities with Kerala’s high ranges and coastal waterways. Begin in Chennai, where colonial landmarks, Mylapore and the Marina introduce the region’s layered character, then follow the East Coast Road to Puducherry. Its French Quarter, Tamil temples and Auroville visitor facilities offer a distinct change of pace.

From Pondicherry, travel inland through the Cauvery delta to Thanjavur and its monumental Brihadisvara Temple. Continue to Madurai for the Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple, palace architecture and the lively lanes around the old city. Temple visits are planned around daily worship schedules, with time allowed for the midday closures common at major shrines.

The landscape changes dramatically on the drive from Madurai to Munnar. This is a full mountain transfer through the Theni region and winding Western Ghats roads, best undertaken in daylight. In Munnar, tea gardens, Mattupetty, Kundala Lake and Eravikulam National Park can be shaped around current park access and weather conditions.

Continue to Thekkady for forested scenery near Periyar, then descend towards Alleppey for Kerala’s backwaters. A private cruise or a waterside stay can be arranged according to the final accommodation plan. The journey concludes in Kochi, with time for Fort Kochi’s waterfront, synagogue quarter and colonial-era streets before departure.

  • A sensible southbound route with no unnecessary return journeys
  • Private road travel suited to the distances and hill-road sections
  • Space for local guides in Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai and Kochi

Tour Itinerary

Your Day-by-Day Journey

Explore your private India tour day by day, with comfortable travel, sightseeing and carefully planned experiences.

Meet your chauffeur at Chennai airport and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, take an easy orientation drive through Mylapore or along the Marina waterfront.

Visit selected Chennai sights such as Kapaleeswarar Temple, San Thome Basilica or Fort St. George before travelling south on the East Coast Road to Pondicherry. Settle into your hotel and stroll the seafront if time permits.

Explore White Town’s heritage streets, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Manakula Vinayagar Temple and the Sacred Heart Basilica. Visit Auroville’s visitor area and Matrimandir viewpoint where current access arrangements allow.

Drive inland through Tamil Nadu and the Cauvery delta to Thanjavur. Visit Brihadisvara Temple, planned around its worship hours, and consider the Maratha Palace complex or bronze-art traditions.

Travel south to Madurai. After hotel check-in, explore the atmospheric streets and markets around the Meenakshi Temple precinct, subject to time and local traffic.

Visit Meenakshi-Sundareswarar Temple and Thirumalai Nayak Palace as timing permits, then make the scenic drive via Theni and Bodinayakanur into the Western Ghats. Arrive in Munnar by evening.

Spend the day among Munnar’s tea landscapes, visiting Mattupetty, Echo Point and Kundala Lake. Eravikulam National Park or the Tea Museum may be included subject to their current opening schedules.

Travel through Kerala’s highland countryside to Thekkady/Kumily. The afternoon is free for a spice plantation visit, village walk or other locally available activity.

Descend from the hills to Alleppey. Spend the afternoon at leisure by the backwaters, or arrange a private cruise or houseboat stay according to the confirmed travel plan.

Travel north to Kochi. Explore Fort Kochi, the Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church, Mattancherry Palace area and the lanes around the Paradesi Synagogue, subject to opening times.

After breakfast, transfer to Kochi International Airport for your onward flight. Departure timing determines whether any final Fort Kochi sightseeing is practical.
