Tour Overview
This privately guided South India journey begins in Chennai, where Tamil temple traditions, colonial landmarks and the Bay of Bengal shape the city’s character. Explore at a considered pace with a private chauffeur and local guide, taking in places such as Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Fort St George and the seafront.
In Pondicherry, slow down among the pastel houses, quiet lanes and cafés of the French Quarter. Its promenade, Franco-Tamil architecture and spiritual sites offer a distinct contrast to Chennai, with time built in for relaxed walks and independent discoveries.
Continue inland to Thanjavur for Brihadeeswarar Temple, the great Chola monument known for its monumental tower and finely detailed stonework. Madurai follows, centred on the extraordinary Meenakshi Amman Temple and the lively streets, markets and Nayak-era buildings around it.
The journey concludes in Kochi, where Chinese fishing nets, old spice warehouses and colonial-era streets tell the story of a long-standing port. Premium stays, well-planned road journeys, knowledgeable regional guides and practical local support make this an easy and rewarding route for international travellers.

Your Day-by-Day Journey
Explore your private India tour day by day, with comfortable travel, sightseeing and carefully planned experiences.
Arrive at Chennai airport, where your private chauffeur will meet you for the transfer to your hotel. The first day is kept deliberately light after an international flight. Depending on your arrival time, take a gentle orientation drive along the Marina Beach seafront and through central neighbourhoods, or simply relax at the hotel. Your tour manager or local representative will review the days ahead, answer practical questions and confirm timing for the following morning. Dinner arrangements can be made locally according to your preference.
Spend the day with a local guide exploring Chennai’s layered history. Visit Kapaleeshwarar Temple in Mylapore, noted for its colourful gopuram and active religious life, then see the nearby Santhome Basilica. Continue to Fort St George, the early British administrative settlement, with St Mary’s Church where access allows. The Government Museum may be included for its important South Indian bronze and archaeological collections. Finish with a drive beside Marina Beach. The order of visits is adjusted for traffic, weekly closures and temple observances.
Leave Chennai after breakfast and travel south by private vehicle to Pondicherry. The drive generally takes several hours, with comfort stops arranged en route. After hotel check-in and time to refresh, join your guide for an introductory walk through White Town, the historic French Quarter. See shuttered villas, ochre and pastel façades, leafy streets and ironwork balconies around the old colonial grid. Continue towards the promenade and French War Memorial before the evening is left free for a relaxed meal at a local restaurant or hotel.
Explore Pondicherry’s Franco-Tamil character at an easy pace. Visit Sri Aurobindo Ashram, observing its quiet rules, and Manakula Vinayagar Temple, one of the city’s well-known Hindu shrines. Your guide will point out churches, civic buildings and trading-era residences that reveal the town’s changing history. There is time to browse small boutiques, pause in a café or walk beside the Bay of Bengal. If desired, an excursion towards Auroville or the archaeological area of Arikamedu can be discussed, subject to access, timings and your interests.
Travel inland through Tamil Nadu’s fertile delta landscapes towards Thanjavur. On arrival, visit Brihadeeswarar Temple, the early eleventh-century Chola masterpiece recognised within the UNESCO-listed Great Living Chola Temples. Its vast courtyard, granite tower and imposing Nandi pavilion reward unhurried exploration. Your guide will explain the temple’s royal origins, architectural details and continuing role as a place of worship. If time permits, see part of the former royal precinct before checking into your hotel. The evening is free for rest after the road journey.
This morning, explore Thanjavur’s royal and artistic legacy. Visit the Royal Palace complex and associated collections where open, which may include galleries of bronzes, paintings and objects linked to the Nayak and Maratha courts. Those interested in architecture may choose to visit Darasuram’s Airavatesvara Temple, another outstanding Chola monument, subject to road conditions and available time. The programme allows for a relaxed lunch and time to appreciate local craft traditions. Temple etiquette, including modest dress and footwear rules, will be explained by your guide.
After breakfast, continue by private vehicle to Madurai, one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest and most important temple cities. The journey is planned with suitable comfort stops, and arrival is usually in the afternoon. After checking in, take a gentle orientation drive through the older parts of the city, passing busy market streets and key landmarks. If timings permit, visit the exterior areas around Meenakshi Amman Temple as evening activity gathers. Your guide will advise on photography restrictions, security procedures and appropriate clothing for the following day’s temple visit.
Begin with a guided visit to Meenakshi Amman Temple, an expansive sacred complex distinguished by its painted gateway towers, pillared halls and active devotional life. Access to certain areas may be restricted, particularly for non-Hindu visitors, but your guide will ensure the most meaningful permitted visit. Continue to Thirumalai Nayak Palace, whose dramatic arches recall seventeenth-century Madurai. Later, walk selected lanes around the temple markets to see flowers, brassware, textiles and food stalls. The afternoon remains flexible for rest, shopping or an optional evening temple-viewing experience.
Transfer to Madurai airport for your flight to Kochi; flight schedules and baggage rules will be confirmed before travel. On arrival, meet your local chauffeur and transfer to your hotel in or near the historic waterfront area. Later, take an introductory walk through Fort Kochi, where Portuguese, Dutch, British and Indian influences appear in churches, homes and public buildings. See the Chinese fishing nets along the shore and enjoy the cooler coastal atmosphere. The evening is open for a seafood dinner or, if available, a traditional performing-arts presentation.
Use the final morning for a guided exploration of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry before your onward transfer. Visit the waterfront, St Francis Church and the lanes around Jew Town, where old warehouses, antique shops and spice merchants reflect Kochi’s long trading history. The Paradesi Synagogue may be viewed subject to opening times and religious closures. Your guide will tailor the timing around your departing flight, with luggage and transfer arrangements handled by your chauffeur. Depart Kochi with a clear sense of South India’s varied cultural landscapes and coastal connections.
